words

Who doesn’t like words? There are a lot of words. Normal words, cool words, lame words, bad words,  and words that make you think. I work in the MTSU Library with a whole load of bright and wonderful librarians and archivists in the Microtexts and digitalizations projects… ah. I just sighed and took a moment to reflect on that. I love the opportunity they’ve given me to come in here and take over some things and jump right into some fun work! Anyways! Every Friday, they have the digitization projects meeting, and after my 8:00 chem lab, not even lying, I go and sit in with them. One librarian in particular, her name is Mayo, always uses gems of words that make me grin so hard! I don’t know what it is about them, but they make me feel happy!

One week, Mayo began to use the word “cull.” What an awesome word! How often do you hear that? Hm? Hardly ever to never, right? Well, it truly is a great word. It’s a verb that means “select from a large quantity.” Yeah, that’s cool. It’s usually used when pulling things aside or separating things, so in case you use it, you can use it correctly. Here’s an example: “Canaan, I’ve put the culled pictures in the red box.”

Just today, she used the colloquialism “tickety-boo,” which apparently comes from an old comedian from the 40s and 50s named Danny Kay. I asked her about it and took notes, so I’m not sure if that’s exactly what she said, or just what I heard. Anyway, it’s a great way of saying “things are fine.” If you use it in a sentence, try something like, “Oh no, the guests are about to arrive! Better make sure everything’s tckety-boo!” Try it, like it. Love it.

Another good one Mayo’s used, which is actually on my Favorite Words List, is “copacetic.” You may be stopping there and contemplating the meaning of that one… well fret no more because I’ll tell you. It means “jointly peaceful.” How cool is that?! You know how kids nowadays say “We cool?” asking if things are all right? Well, this is a better-sounding and more awesome way to say that. Copacetic.

Today, I want you to Google “cool vocal words” or “improve my vocabulary” and find a word a day to begin working it into your vocabulary. It makes you feel like a pro (trust me on this one) as well as making others feel great when they hear a new, big word!
